Survey, documentation, and excavation projects carried out at Aphrodisias in 1997 and 1998 included the continuation of the geophysical survey of the unexcavated parts of the site begun in 1995, and further work on the Stadium, the Temple of Aphrodite, the Bouleuterion, the Sebasteion, the Basilica, and the North Agora. A major site conservation project was the replacement of the lintel and semicircular tympanum of the city's West Gate. Important new finds of sculpture are a sarcophagus found in the winter of 1997-1998 in the cemetery northeast of the site and three sarcophagi from the nearby village of Ataeymir. Sculpture conservation projects included the restoration and installation in the Aphrodisias Museum of a selection of Roman portrait busts and heads.
