Excavations in the Sanctuary of Apollo at Pompeii, 1997
John J. Dobbins, Larry F. Ball, James G. Cooper, Stephen L. Gavel, and Sophie Hay
Three test trenches were excavated in and near the Sanctuary of Apollo at Pompeii in 1997 to address chronological, architectural, and urbanistic issues pertaining to the evolution of the sanctuary and its relationship to the forum and neighboring houses. An ostensible deformation in the street pattern at the northwest corner of the sanctuary and a legal inscription, CIL X, 787, also contribute to the analysis. Results point to an Augustan date for a major expansion that achieved the sanctuary's current form, including most of the precinct wall and the tufa colonnade.
